Police indicated that the suspects managed to unlock their handcuffs while in the latrine, raising serious concerns about possible negligence or collusion by the officers on duty at the time.

The two officers responsible for guarding the suspects have since been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

Their identities have been withheld as investigations continue.

North West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson SP Collins Asea confirmed the arrests and emphasized the force’s commitment to accountability.

“We take matters of professionalism and discipline very seriously. Any officer found complicit in aiding suspects to escape will face the full extent of the law,” SP Asea said.

He noted that preliminary investigations point to lapses in standard operating procedures, particularly in the handling and supervision of suspects in custody.

“There are clear guidelines on how suspects should be handled, even during routine situations like a short call. These procedures were not adequately followed,” he added.

SP Asea reassured the public that efforts are underway to re-arrest the escapees.

“Our teams are actively pursuing the suspects. We call upon members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by sharing any information that could lead to their arrest,” he urged.

Local leaders in Obongi expressed concern over the incident, warning that such lapses could undermine public trust in law enforcement, especially in serious cases like rape.

Police have appealed to the community to remain vigilant and report any sightings or information about the suspects to the nearest police station.
